1923 - October 18 2006 Age 83.
Mike Karbo, a longtime teacher, administrator and coach at DeLaSalle, Benilde and Bloomington high schools, died Wednesday. He was 83.
He earned 11 letters playing football, baseball and basketball at DeLaSalle from 1938 to 1942, and continued to star athletically at the University of St. Thomas when he returned from service aboard Navy submarines in World War II.
But he made his mark as teacher and coach at DeLaSalle, where four of his baseball teams were state Catholic champions. He went to Benilde (now Benilde-St. Margaret's) as athletic director and coach, and his 1961 football team and 1963 basketball team won state Catholic championships.
Karbo was an administrator and assistant coach at Bloomington Lincoln High School from 1965 to 1974 and an administrator at Bloomington Kennedy from 1974 to 1986.
He also announced for the American Wrestling Association for 27 years.
"He was everything a man of the 'Greatest Generation' could be, and somehow he still managed to get us kids camping, hunting and fishing," said Greg Karbo, of Weatherford, Texas one of three sons.
"Everybody knew him, and the man could have had any number of golf or fishing partners. But he was our guy, and we were his guys."
"You put him out on post and the guy was a dead shot on a full-speed pheasant," he said. "We're going to miss him sitting at the tiller, too, and telling us where to go for walleges."
Michael Karbo is survived by his wife of 59 years, Louise; sons Greg, Michael and David, all of Weatherford, Texas; daughter Nancy Young, Annandale; sister Wanda, Las Vegas; Brother Eddie, Minneapolis; nine grandchildren, and a greatgranddaughter. He was preceded in death by a sister, Rosallie, and a brother, Wally, a longtime wrestling promoter in Minnesota.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Edwards's Catholic Church in Bloomington, with visitation one hour before services at the church and from 5-8p.m. Tuesday at Washburn McReavy Werness Brothers Chapel in Bloomington.
