Who can forget crossing the Hennepin Ave Bridge in the winter with the wind blowing. Remember the steel road bed of the bridge, you could look down into the river below. Thought it was a good idea at the time.

Mini Reunion of August 6, 2008 - UPDATE

Class Officers 1957

From the Desk of Denny Mickelson

Our 4th annual summer mini reunion started with a best ball/scramble format. Only six golfers were able to play. Next year we’ll have more. The three-some of Mike Ryan, Bill Groschen, and Dave Turgeon bested Dick Marrs, Denny Madden, & Denny Mickelson by one stroke.

Others who joined the golfers at the “Little Wagon” were Chuck Calhoun, Jerry Caputa, Steve Dalsin, Bob Dorff, John Gallas, Phil Gerber, Paul Hoffinger, Jim Hogan, Mike Jann. Ross Noard, Gary Paradise, John Roban, Mike Romens, Mike Savage, Joe Scheinost, John Spilane, Dick Theis & Dick Velner.

Ross Noard informed me he was “more than upset” that the championship banners in the gym at DLS did not have the 1957 Swim Team shown as the State Champs. I told Ross I had researched all the championships for those banners and I found nothing in our yearbook or Islander to say “We are The Champions”. Ross said it was too late for the yearbook. I told Ross I heard that DE lost the state championship because Nick Palaia had jumped into the pool too early in celebration that we were the champs and this disrupted another swimmer. Ross informed me that was the Twin City Invitational meet and not the state meet…AND Nick jumped in after all swimmers completed the race and a Hopkins swimmer was the guilty person and not Nick. A swimming judge identified the wrong person. Ross said he was ready to deck the judge and actually was kicked off the team by Coach Gustafson for his bad temper. He had to apologize to Coach Gustafson to get back on the team. Ross said that the 1957 team was the best swim team DE ever had. It beat perennial swim power St. Thomas in a dual meet for the first time in DeLaSalle history and it bested them in the state tournament. Well Ross, we’ll have another banner unveiling for the 1957 DeLaSalle Swim Team at a pep fest and invite all the ’57 state champ swim team to be there.

Bob Dorff attended our mini-reunion while visiting home from teaching English in Anquig, China. Congratulations to first time wedded Bob and his new bride. Bob looked as happy as can be. Bob met his wife while in China and said he expects to live in China for many years.

Image Bill Heurung greeted us for the first time at any reunion. He just looked around and tried to figure out who these old guys were. Most haven’t seen Bill since ’57 but his face hasn’t changed much. Bill just wanted to see a few guys before “you all die”…. nice to cheer us up. Bill says his hobby is decorating cakes for people. The one problem he says he has is he’s been known to eat the whole cake. Great to see Bill and I expect Bill will supply a cake for our next mini-reunion in December.

Joe Schienost participated in a four day bike a thon through northern Minnesota this summer. Joe’s in shape to do 60 to 75 miles a day!

On health news. John Gallas says he’s a living miracle having heard news he had cancer a few years ago but no cancer is indicated on his most recent medical exam at the VA. John looked good. Mike Jann has joined many of us who have had their prostate removed. Mike is still in the recovery stage but trim and healthy. Mike Romens couldn’t make our 50th because he was recovery from an aortic repair and feeling good now.

Our next mini-reunion gathering is not going to be at the “Little Wagon”. We’ll have a buffet luncheon at Elsie’s on 8th Ave & Marshall Street starting at 11:30 A.M.on Tuesday December 30th. Guys thought we could get more to attend a lunch Buffet about 12:30. Cost is $25. If someone wants to come and just visit; that’s alright too. I’ll be sending out a reminder in early November with another mailing to get an accurate count and up front money for the buffet. Elsie’s is really close to the old girls St. Anthony High School location. See you December 30th ….between Christmas and New Years Day.

John Baptist DeLaSalle, Pray for us.

Live, Jesus, in our hearts. Forever!

Denny
